DEPUTY MINISTER PHILLY MAPULANE TO LAUNCH DIGITAL SUMMIT & YA RONA DIGITAL AMBASSADORS PROGRAMME IN SOL PLAATJE LOCAL MUNICIPALITY, NORTHERN CAPE

Deputy Minister of Communications & Digital Technologies, Hon. Philly Mapulane will on Friday, 17 November 2023, be in the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality in the Northern Cape Province for the launch of the Northern Cape Digital Summit & the Yarona Digital Ambassadors Programme alongside the National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa (NEMISA).

The launch of the Northern Cape Digital Summit aims to bridge the digital divide between Telecommunications Industry Leaders, SMMES, Tertiary Institutions, Government, Private Sector, and the Youth in the province. The summit is about creating a marketplace for technology and telecommunications sector to engage technology users, youth, and educators on the benefits of digital technologies, the opportunities that can be harnessed by youth and to provide digital access through the provision of digital labs to rural schools and digital hubs to local municipalities.

The Deputy Minister will also use this opportunity to launch the Ya Rona Digital Ambassadors Programme, which is aimed at empowering and upscaling communities on basic digital literacies. The Ya Rona Digital Ambassadors Programme is part of the Department’s mandate to bridge the digital divide through a concerted programme of skilling South Africans in the use of new digital technologies, and to draw more young people into the economy by addressing the digital skills deficit.

He will further use this platform with the Film and Publications Board to inform the public on its mandate as well as to educate the public on the importance of internet safety and cyber security in the digital era.
