When delivering the 2023 Budget Vote of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, Minister Mondli Gungubele made a commitment that South Africa will reach 80% connectivity by 2024. “Through our flagship programme, SA Connect, we are dedicated to bridging the digital divide by providing Wi-Fi access to communities and ensuring universal access to the internet”, said Minister Gungubele during his budget vote speech in May 2023.
As a follow up on this commitment, the Minister will officially launch the SA Connect Phase 2 project in Mount Ayliff, in the Afred Nzo District Municipality on Saturday, 04 November 2023. The project is aimed at providing core and access network infrastructure to enable broadband connectivity to community Wi-Fi hotspots that will connect households. SA Connect is a national project that galvanises the capability, resources, and energy of public and private sectors towards realising a bold vision of a connected society through extending connectivity to all schools, health facilities, and government facilities. To date 4,565 households and 124 community Wi-Fi hotspots have been connected in 11 district municipalities across South Africa.
